Guest Speaker Gina McCarthy, Former Administrator, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
A career public servant in both Democratic and Republican administrations, Gina McCarthy served as the Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency from 2013 to 2017 and has been a leading advocate for common sense strategies to protect public health and the environment for more than thirty years. As the head of EPA under President Obama, she led historic progress to achieve the administration’s public health and environmental protection goals and Climate Action Plan. During her tenure, EPA initiatives cut air pollution, protected water resources, reduced greenhouse gases and strengthened chemical safety to better protect more Americans, especially the most vulnerable, from negative health impacts.
Internationally, McCarthy worked with the UN and WHO on a variety of efforts and represented the U.S. on global initiatives to reduce high risk sources of pollution. Known for her pragmatic approaches and disarming, plain-speaking style, McCarthy has earned the respect of the environmental, public health and business communities with her thorough understanding of all sides of climate, air quality, chemical safety, environmental justice and health equity, and water, land and natural resource protection and restoration discussions.
Gina McCarthy is currently serving as a Senior Fellow at the Institute of Politics at Harvard and as a Menschel Senior Leadership Fellow at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, emphasizing her career-long position that public health and the environment are critically interconnected.
Honoring Nancy Drourr with the Rachel Carson Advocacy Award
Nancy Sobin Drourr has dedicated her entire adult life to connecting with and investing in future generations. For 43 years, Nancy worked as the Development Director at Brimmer and May, a private K-12 school in Newton, MA – engaging with youth, parents and alumnae/i, encouraging the values of giving back and taking collective responsibility for the world around us.
After learning about the work at Silent Spring Institute to study toxic chemicals in our environment, Nancy helped lead the effort at Brimmer and May to educate both administrators and students to make simple, practical changes in school policies and procedures regarding chemical safety.
Following her retirement in 2014, Nancy continued assisting organizations dedicated to intergenerational education and connection. In addition to the significant fundraising that Nancy has done to forward missions of empowering generations, she has also taught ethics classes to seniors and facilitated programs based on the “Facing History and Ourselves” curriculum, including the Holocaust and other atrocities.
As a breast cancer survivor, Nancy feels adamantly that it is this generation’s responsibility to stop the disease, and believes that the work of Silent Spring Institute is critical to achieving that goal.
